Injuries while at work continue to be one of the most common types of injuries in the country. Approximate 3.1 million non-fatal workplace injuries were reported in the United States among private companies in 2010.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Manufacturing was the sole industry with an incline of reported injuries at a rate of 4.4 cases per 100 full-time employees. All other industries including private construction, healthcare and social assistance, private industry and the National public sector all declined.
It was also reported that there were 4,547 fatal work injuries in the United States in 2010. Key findings of the Bureau’s report are as follows:
- Number of fatal injuries among self-employed declined by 6 percent
- Fatalities in the private mining industry increased by 74%
- Fatal work injuries in private construction is down 40% since 2006
- Work-related fatalities caused by fires more than doubled and was at the highest since 2003
